How to Make Mini Christmas Tree Pizzas

0

Although pizza isn't exactly a traditional holiday dish, one thing's for sure: Pizza is delicious all year round! So, why not make these mini Christmas tree pizzas as a festive snack or appetizer? Thanks to store-bought pizza sauce and canned crescent dough, this recipe is super quick and easy. You can even turn it into a family activity, as kids and adults alike will love making (and eating) these cheesy treats.

Mini Christmas tree pizzas

Video of the Day

Things You\’ll Need

  • 2 8-ounce tubes of crescent dough, chilled

  • 3/4 cup pizza sauce

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1/3 cup black olives, sliced

  • 1/3 cup green bell pepper, diced

  • 1/3 cup mini pepperoni

  • Fresh basil or parsley, chopped

  • Oil

  • Christmas tree cookie cutter

Ingredients for mini Christmas tree pizzas

Tip

Omit the pepperoni to make the vegetarian mini pizzas.

Step 1

Add about 1 teaspoon oil to a small skillet. Cook the bell peppers for 5 minutes, or until slightly tender. Set aside.

Cook diced bell peppers

Step 2

Preheat the oven to 350°F. If you'd like, line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats to catch burned cheese. Otherwise, you can use unlined baking sheets.

Roll out a tube of crescent dough on a sheet of parchment paper. Gently press the perforated lines together.

Roll out crescent dough

Step 3

Press a Christmas tree cookie cutter into the dough, cutting out as many trees as possible. You can do this by placing the cut-outs very close together. It also helps to flip the cookie after every cut-out to get the most out of your dough.

Repeat with the second tube of dough.

Cut out Christmas tree crescent pieces

Tip

To re-use leftover dough, roll the scraps into balls. Place each ball between two sheets of parchment paper, flatten with a rolling pin then transfer to a plate or baking dish. Chill for 10 to 15 minutes in the freezer; this will make the dough less sticky and easier to work with. Once chilled, cut out more trees.

Step 4

Place the crescent trees on the lined baking sheets. Bake for 5 minutes.

Pre-bake crescent trees

Step 5

Spoon about 1 tablespoon of pizza sauce on to each tree.

Top with pizza sauce

Step 6

Add the shredded mozzarella cheese. Top with bell peppers, sliced olives and/or mini pepperoni.

Add cheese, bell peppers, olives and pepperoni

Step 7

Bake for another 8 minutes, or until the edges are golden and the cheese is melted and bubbly. It may take more or less time to finish baking, depending on your oven.

Bake until cheese is melted

Step 8

Garnish with chopped basil or parsley. Serve immediately.

How to Measure Using a Shot Glass

0

Shots with whisky and liqquor in cocktail bar Row of shot glasses being filled Image Credit: jordan_rusev/iStock/Getty Images

A shot isn't a standard unit of measure like a cup or a tablespoon. But in the United States, a beverage shot typically contains 1 1/2 ounces, the equivalent to 3 liquid tablespoons. Shot glasses obviously work for drink recipes, but you can also use them to measure liquid ingredients when you cook. A 1 1/2-ounce shot glass equals about 44 milliliters or 9 teaspoons.

Video of the Day

Measuring Tips

Fill a typical 1 1/2-ounce shot glass to the very top; otherwise, you'll short the recipe a little. Because you have to fill it to the brim, you should hold the shot glass above your shaker, pot or bowl, fill it, then dump it in. This way you don't have to worry about spilling any liquid when you lift it up. You do need to be careful not to over pour, though.

Other Sizes

Smaller shot glasses, often called "pony" glasses, hold 1 ounce of liquid. Many shot glasses also come in 2-ounce sizes. Sometimes the bigger ones have a line near the rim, which is the 1 1/2-ounce mark.

How to Tell If an Asian Pear is Ripe

0

...

Asian pears differ from European and American pears in that they are picked ripe from the tree and don't require a secondary ripening period. There are many different varieties of Asian pears, so selecting a ripe pear based on the appearance of the skin may not work well. Once you have become familiar with a particular variety, you may learn to distinguish ripe pears of a particular variety by the color of the skin.

Video of the Day

Step 1

...

Look at the skin. The skin of the pear should not have very many brown spots. Although Asian pears bruise easily, excessive brown spots indicate a pear that is over ripe. One or two small brown spots indicate a pear nearing over-ripeness. More than five or six, and the pear is likely over ripe or severely bruised.

Step 2

...

Feel the weight of the pear compared to others of similar size. A ripe pear will be heavy for its size. If you have two pears of similar size and one is heavier, it is likely more ripe than the lighter pear.

Step 3

...

Smell the pear. The best way to test for ripeness is to smell the pear. It should smell sweet and very fragrant.

Step 4

...

Check for a springy texture to the pear. This is something that you will pick up after eating Asian pears for a while, but the springiness of the pear should be somewhere between an American or European pear and an apple.

Step 5

...

The best way to check a particular batch of pears is to ask for a sample. Market pear sellers throughout Asia offer slices of their produce. If you are buying pears in the supermarket, consider buying one and eating it outside the store to test ripeness. The pear should be sweet, crisp, fragrant and juicy. Asian pears should not be soft like American and European pears.

Step 6

Pick only pears that separate easily from the tree if you are choosing a pear from a tree.

Tip

Be more careful with Asian pears than other fruit; most varieties bruise very easily.

How to Add Food Coloring to a Drink to Change the Appearance & Make It Taste Different

0

Things You\’ll Need

  • Bottled beer (light-colored beers work best)

  • Glasses

  • Food coloring (various colors)

  • Stirring spoon

  • Coconut rum

  • Ice

  • Pineapple juice

  • Soda water

  • Punch

... You don\’t need the luck o\’ the Irish to make green beer.

Whether you are dyeing a green beer for St. Patrick's Day, mixing up a blue Hawaiian or simply coloring your party's punch, adding food coloring to a drink gives it a customized color of your own choosing. While food coloring won't change the taste of your drink, it makes it look festive in whatever color of the rainbow you want.

Video of the Day

Green Beer

Step 1

Tilt your glass and slowly pour your drink to avoid building up a foamy head.

Step 2

Drop in six drops of blue food coloring while slowly stirring to achieve a dull, olive green coloring.

Step 3

Pour another glass.

Step 4

Drop in six drops of green food coloring while slowly stirring for a bright, sparkly emerald green coloring.

Blue Hawaiian

Step 1

Mix a shot of coconut rum in a glass with ice, pineapple juice and a splash of soda.

Step 2

Add 3 drops of blue food coloring. This gives your blue Hawaiian color without the taste of blue curacao.

Step 3

Add more food coloring for a bolder blue tint.

Colored Party Punch

Step 1

Mix a batch of colored party punch by adding food coloring quickly to a prepared bowl of the drink — instead of squirting one drop at a time, squirt a steady stream of the coloring while stirring the mixture.

Step 2

Stir the mixture throughout the party to prevent the contents from settling.

Step 3

Place different containers of food coloring near the empty glasses and do not add dye to communal punch bowl — this way, guests can add coloring to their own drinks for personalized concoctions.

Warning

Don't try adding green coloring to darker beers like stouts — it takes too much food coloring and will dye your mouth.

Nashville Hot Chicken Recipe You Need to Try

0

I grew up in Tennessee and fried chicken is something that I have memories of from an early age. And I have never challenged my mama's fried chicken… until now. There is only one recipe that can stand up to it, and that is Nashville Hot Chicken! When I first heard about hot chicken, I was no longer living in Tennessee, so I decided I needed to try it for myself at home.

The results were phenomenal. The chicken is perfectly crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and has the most incredible sweet and spicy sauce poured over after it's done cooking that takes this recipe to the next level!

Video of the Day

Nashville Hot Chicken

Things You\’ll Need

  • 1 whole chicken, cut into parts

  • 6 to 8 cups of vegetable oil

  • 2 cups of buttermilk

  • 3 tablespoons hot sauce

  • 1 egg

  • 4 cups all purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 5 teaspoons cayenne

  • 2 1/2 teaspoons salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon chili powder

  • Dill pickle slices for topping

Tip

Cut the breasts of the chicken in half for more even cooking time. You can also have your butcher or local grocer cut the chicken in advance.

Step 1: Prep dredge and chicken.

Cut up your chicken and dry thoroughly with a paper towel. Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper on both sides. Prep your dredging station by combining flour, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon. onion powder, 1 teaspoon cayenne, and 1 teaspoon salt in a large bowl and mix to combine. In another bowl combine buttermilk, egg, and hot sauce and whisk until combined. Have a baking sheet nearby to place chicken on.

Nashville Hot Chicken

Step 2: Dredge the chicken.

Place the chicken into the flour mixture and coat lightly, and then shake to remove any excess flour. Take the floured chicken and place it into the buttermilk mixture and coat thoroughly. The last step is to place the chicken back into the flour mixture and coat entirely. Place the dredged chicken on a baking sheet to prepare for frying. Continue these steps until all parts of the chicken are coated.

Nashville Hot Chicken Nashville Hot Chicken

Step 3: Heat oil to 350 degrees.

Pour enough oil into the bottom of a dutch oven or a deep cast iron skillet so that it's two inches deep. Adjust oil amount depending on the pan you are using. Heat the oil until it reaches 350 degrees. Test the temperature with an oil thermometer.

Step 4: Fry the chicken.

When the oil has reached the desired temperature, place half of the chicken pieces (careful not to crowd the pan) into the hot oil and cook for 7 to 8 minutes per side until golden brown and the inside of the chicken reaches 160 degrees for white meat and 165 degrees for dark meat. After cooking, place the chicken on a paper towel lined baking sheet with a wire rack on top to allow the chicken to drain excess oil. Make sure the oil has returned to about 325 degrees before adding your next batch of chicken.

Nashville Hot Chicken Nashville Hot Chicken

Step 5: Make the spice blend for topping.

After the chicken has cooked, add the remaining spices of garlic powder, cayenne, paprika, chili powder, salt, and brown sugar to a medium size bowl and carefully whisk in 1 cup of the hot fry oil until well combined.

Nashville Hot Chicken

Step 6: Drizzle spicy sweet oil over the chicken.

When you are ready to serve the chicken, drizzle the hot spicy oil over the chicken with a little extra served on the side and top with dill pickle slices. Serve immediately.
