What Are Frosties Made Of?

Frosty's are a signature frozen dairy dessert sold at Wendy's restaurants worldwide. Different from ice cream and milkshakes, Frosty's are thick enough in consistency that you must consume them by spoon rather than straw. This beloved fast-food desert has been served in the same bright yellow and red cup since the first store opened in Columbus, Ohio in 1969.

Ingredients of Original Chocolate Frosty

The ingredients listed in order of amount used are: milk, sugar, corn syrup, cream, whey, nonfat dry milk, cocoa (processed with alkali), guar gum, mono and diglycerides, cellulose gum, carrageenan, calcium sulfate, disodium, phosphate, artificial and natural flavoring, vitamin A palmitate.

Nutrition

The nutritional value of Frosty's vary depending on the size and type chosen. For a medium sized original chocolate Frosty, there are 410 calories, 90 of those calories from fat, and 10 grams of total fat. The Frosty has 35 mg of cholesterol and 190 mg of sodium. The medium vanilla Frosty is slightly less healthy, still having 410 calories, but 100 calories from fat, 11 grams total fat, and 40 mg of cholesterol. Other medium sized Frosty options including the Twisted Frosty's and shakes all have over 380 calories and at least 11 grams of total fat.

Variations

As of 2010, Wendy's offers Frosty's in original chocolate and vanilla, with options of adding M&Ms, Oreos, and Nestle Tollhouse cookie dough to make a Twisted Frosty. Frosty Floats, and shakes in vanilla bean, strawberry, and chocolate fudge are also available. Limited stores promote the Coffee Toffee Twisted Frosty's and Frosty-cino's, deserts that provide a mix of classic Frosty taste with coffee and espresso added in.

History

Wendy's original owner Dave Thomas provided funding for creating a Frosty at a request by dairyman E.M. "Bill" Barker. The original Frosty, while considered chocolate, is actually a mixture of both chocolate and vanilla, providing an overall light and smooth taste. The original Frosty was the only Frosty sold by Wendy's until 2006 when vanilla flavor was introduced due to popular demand. Additional flavors including options provided for the Frosty shakes were added beginning in 2007.
