What's the trick to making fun Halloween treats for kids? Just a little imagination mixed with the right ingredients. These three not-so-spooky recipes aim to please. And best of all, they're so simple, even the littlest cooks can help to create their own string cheese witches' broom, spider eggs and pudding o'lanterns.

Video of the Day

String Cheese Witches' Brooms

Split the String Cheese

Start by cutting a piece of string cheese in half, horizontally. This will be the "straw" for your string cheese witches' broom.

Note: One piece of string cheese makes two brooms.

Create the Broom Straw

Using a paring knife, score the cheese twice, about halfway through the cheese lengthwise. Rotate and repeat. You should have six pieces of "straw" when you're finished cutting. (If you have any especially thick sections you can slice again as needed.) Then fluff the "straw" outward.

Add the Broom Sticks

Tie a piece of fresh chives around the cheese and insert a pretzel stick. Don't press the pretzel in too far, just enough to make it stick.

Serve or Store

Serve your string cheese witches' brooms immediately or store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Spider Eggs

Step 1

First boil your eggs: put eggs in a pan covered with cold water by about 2 inches. Bring to a boil then turn off heat, cover and let sit for 12 minutes. Rinse with cold water and peel.

Hint: Eggs about a week old peel more easily than fresh eggs.

Step 2

Now you're basically making deviled eggs to use as the base of your spider eggs. Cut eggs horizontally, scoop out yolks and mix with your favorite combination of mayonnaise, mustard, salt, pepper, and so on. Fill the eggs back up with the yolk mixture and refrigerate for 10 minutes if your eggs are getting too soft or runny.

Step 3

Slice one black olive in half, lengthwise and place in center. Then slice slivers to make "legs".

Step 4

Assemble the spider by placing the tips of the "legs" under the "body." For more realistic results, try to make the legs come together at an angle under the body instead of going straight out to the sides.

Step 5

Serve immediately or store in an air-tight container for up to 48 hours. The olives may slip or discolor the egg mixture after that.

Pudding-o'-Lanterns

Step 1

Start with your favorite chocolate pudding recipe and a few fresh clementines.

Step 2

Use a sharp knife to cut off the top of your clementine and set aside.

Step 3

A small spoon is all you need to gently but firmly release the orange inside from its peel. You'll squish some of the orange initially but soon the fruit will start to separate from the peel, then you can work your spoon all the way around. Save the insides as a snack for the cook.

Step 4

Using a permanent black marker, draw any kind of jack-o-lantern face you like.

Step 5

Fill with pudding and replace the lid but do it just off to the side so kids can see what's in store.
